Beyond the Numbers: Getting the Story on Latino Education

The Fifth Annual EWA Conference for Spanish-Language Media

EWA has a limited number of scholarships available to pay for the travel and registration fees of journalists who want to receive this training.

Journalists who apply to EWA for a scholarship and attend all institute sessions can receive reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses, as well as one or two nights of hotel (depending upon the distance traveled), and waiver of registration fees. Those who wish to attend only part of the EWA institute can receive a scholarship to waive their EWA institute registration costs. Journalists who are already registered for the NAHJ convention can still apply for either full or partial scholarships to the EWA education reporting institute.

Participants at the EWA Spanish-language institute also can register to attend the rest of the NAHJ National Conference at the early bird rate of $250. In addition, those who sign up to attend  the NAHJ conference will also receive a complementary NAHJ membership.

The upcoming institute represents the fifth time EWA has offered a convening for journalists in Spanish. But this is  the first time the education journalism organization is partnering with NAHJ to provide training for NAHJ national conference participants.

The institute will focus on higher education from 2 to 6 p.m. on July 20, and pre-K to 12th grade from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on July 21. Higher education programming will delve into access, supports and success for Latino students in college, as well as offer training on education data sources and uses. Topics for the P-12 programming will include educating dual-language learners after changes in federal law, Latinos in the teacher workforce, the state of Puerto Rican education, school choice, and more.
